Dear Santa

CLICK ON SANTA TO READ OUR LETTERS AND FIND OUT WHAT WE WISH FOR THIS CHRISTMAS!

This week we read stories about Santa and talked about how Santa delivers gifts to children who have been good. We learned how to write a friendly letter and wrote three reasons why we have been good this year. We also told Santa what we wished for this year. We tried our best to sound out our letters and some of us told our reasons to Mrs. Yu orally.

Turkey Poem

Our November poem of the month is called, "Here is a Turkey." Students used Kidpix during computer lab to illustrate our turkey poems. The first week, we made our turkeys making sure to add colorful feathers, a face, beak, and legs. The second week, we made the background of a farm. Students were asked to add details to their background, such as a fence, ground, or barn. Here are the words of our poem:

Here is a Turkey

Here is a turkey,
With his tail spread wide.
He sees the farmer coming,
So he's trying to hide.
He runs across the barnyard,
Wobble, wobble, wobble.
Talking turkey talk,
Gobble, gobble, gobble.

Pumpkin

We learned a poem for the month of October called, "Pumpkin." Have your child share the poem with you! These are the words to the poem:

Pumpkin
A pumpkin is orange.
A pumpkin is round.
A pumpkin grows big,
On a vine on the ground.
But a Halloween pumpkin,
With a smile and light,
Is a glad Jack O'Lantern,
On Halloween night!

Here are students' illustrations of the poem using the software Kidpix. We made these in computer lab over a 2 week period.

M Pictures

This was our second time in literacy centers, and our second time using the laptops for computer centers. The letter of the week was M, and students drew different pictures of words that start with M. We talked about using at least 5 colors and having 5 details in the background (i.e. sun, grass, etc). Also, I showed them how the M word should be the largest focus of the picture, and everything else should be details that match the M word. In addition, we are only use the pencil and paint bucket tool to make our drawings. Here are this week's illustrations!

Fall Patterns

Thank you so much to our computer lab volunteers!!! Most of our projects take 2 weeks to complete. Without the volunteers, some students would not have been able to finish their project!

In math, we have been practicing all types of patterns such as ABAB or ABB or AAB or ABC, etc. In computer lab, we used a new program called Kidspiration to build patterns using fall foods. Students had to learn how to drag and drop pictures onto their paper in order to finish the pattern sequences. On the last row, they created their own pattern of their choice. Take a look at everyone's work!

S Pictures

On Wednesdays, we have literacy centers in our classroom. One of the centers is computer center, where we get to work on a laptop and draw a picture that starts with the letter of the week. This week, we learned different vocabulary words that start with the letter S.

Students receive stars depending on how much they finish during the center:
4 stars = large, colorful picture with 5 or more colors (real colors, i.e not using random colors)
3 stars = finished a picture but it has 1-4 colors or no details
2 stars = did not finish a picture but they were trying to draw something the whole time
1 star = was not drawing a picture and was playing with other things on the computer

Here are pictures of words that start with S!

Apple Trees

Dear Families,

Here is our first project in the computer lab. We illustrated the poem, The Apple Tree, using the Kidpix software. Here are the words to the poem:

The Apple Tree
Here is the tree, with leaves so green.
Here are the apples, that hang between.
When the wind blows, the apples fall.
Here is the basket, to gather them all.

To make the apple tree, we learned how to draw using the rectangular tool (for the tree trunk and the basket), as well as the pencil tool to draw the tree and grass. We also used the apple stamps and finally, we used paint bucket to color in the picture so that there is "no white space." Great job everyone!

Every week, I will try to post at least one new project that the students complete on the computers! We use the computer lab every Wednesday during overlap, and we also use student laptops as one of our centers on Wednesday! I will also post pictures of our classroom decorations each month so that you can see all of the students' beautiful work!

Here are photos of our August Classroom Decorations!
